Calling The Earth To Witness
Painting in a Laotian monastery. Buddha during the Battle with Mara pointing towards the earth summoning Phra Mae Thorani to come to his assistance.
"Touching the earth" refers to the Buddha's pointing towards the earth, to summon the Earth Goddess to come to his assistance in obtaining enlightenment, by witnessing to his past good deeds.
In Thai, earth goddess is known as Phra Mae Thorani, Mae Phra Thorani or Nang Thorani. She is also known as Wathondara or Wathondare in Burmese, from Pali Vasudhara and Preah Thorani in Khmer language. She is an earth goddess of the Buddhist mythology of the region. She is also known as Suvathara or Sowathara.
In Thai Magic, the earth goddess is summoned to provide the strongest physical and spiritual protection to a master. Her mantra will seal all of the nine openings and prevent any spirits intrusion or black magic attack. Let us recall that all of the 9 openings are: the crown, eyes, nose, mouth ears, anus, sexual organ, hands and feet.
For illustration purpose only, the protective mantra is as below:
PUD LAY LAY, BUK LAY YAN TI,
CHEN KUNCREW, BAT TI YAI
KHO KAM MA, SITTHII YOU KUP ROB NOI,
AK, NA MO PUD THA YAK, MAK AK UK,
MAT TI YA, BATTI PA WEY, LAY HARD GAN HARD,
MEY THA RA NI EAI!
SANKHAN LO GA VI THU, PUDTHAN ART,
THAMMANG ART, SANGKAHN ART,
ART NOI: NA MO PUD THA YAK…. (1X)
NA SU BIT DOH PUD THO THOA …. (9X)
You may think having a strong protection is good. It has a downside that in case of any tumor growth or cancerous growth, the doctor may not be able to detect such a growth and give proper treatment in time. The protective shield also delays the natural dying process as the soul cannot escape from the body, causing difficult in dying.
